1 Out of 4 People Die of Heart Attacks: Could You Identify These Symptoms?

As of June 2011 everyday 10,000 people turn 65. Pretty crazy huh? The baby-boomers were the largest group of people born at one time ever! Between 1946 to 1964 1 BILLION babies were born. What this means now is that the majority of our population is aging. What generally comes with age? Yep, you guessed it…illness.

The top 4 death-related illnesses are heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, followed by respiratory diseases and so on. These chronic degenerative diseases, which are primarily preventable, are what’s killing the people we love.

However, there is something we can do about it. Becoming educated on some of the signs and symptoms associated with these life threatening illnesses and being able to respond if an emergent event happens can be the difference between life and death for our loved ones.

This is the first part in a 4 part series I’ll be covering called Recognize and Respond. In this blog post I’ll be covering what heart disease is. How it impacts us here in the U.S. How to recognize when someone is having a heart attack. Lastly, I’ll be going over briefly what YOU can do to help someone you’ve noticed possibly having a heart attack.

Are you ready? Let’s go.

Heart disease is the NUMBER 1 killer in the U.S. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) 610,000 people die from it every year. Guys, that’s 1 in 4 deaths. They also have shown that almost 400,000 of those deaths are from Coronary Artery Disease.

Guess how many heart attacks happen each year? 735,000 and about 500,000 of those are first-titips-for-a-healthy-heartmers. Here’s what is staggering (as if those prior stats weren’t), the first symptom of heart disease, in the majority of people who are diagnosed with heart disease, is death.

Recognizing signs and symptoms is super important, but I think it’s also necessary to educate people on the importance of the big 3: Diet, Exercise, Supplementation. Even the federal government has finally figured out that the best way to treat disease, the least costly way to treat disease, is prevention.

Despite what you might think, the underlying cause of heart disease is not high cholesterol. Although, it is a risk factor, along with high blood pressure and diabetes. The NUMBER 1 CAUSE of heart disease is oxidative stress. If you can lessen the amount of oxidative stress one undergoes, you’ve fixed the biggest problem. The way you do that is through diet and supplementation.

As far as exercise goes, the American Heart Association recommends getting “at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise (or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity). Thirty minutes a day, five times a week is an easy goal to remember. You will also experience benefits even if you divide your time into two or three segments of 10 to 15 minutes per day.”

So let’s get to it. Let’s discuss the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. You might not know this, but the signs and symptoms are different between men and women. Signs and symptoms of a heart attack in women aren’t what one would usually associate with a heart attack. Because of this its a wonder why men are more often dying from heart attacks than women!

Here is a guide for you to use for both Men and Women. These are the most common MAJOR signs and symptoms associated with a heart attack:

Men

  • Shortness of Breath
  • Weakness
  • Unusual Fatigue
  • Cold Sweats
  • Dizziness
  • Chest Pain
  • Left Arm, Shoulder, Neck, Facial pain
  • Tightness or Pressure of the chest

Women

  • Unusual Fatigue
  • Sleep Disturbance
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Indigestion
  • Anxiety
  • Back Pain
  • Upper Abdominal Pain

Outside these signs and symptoms, NEVER discount the classical symptoms of heart attacks: chest pain, chest tightness, chest pressure, left arm, shoulder, neck and facial pain.

Now when this happens, it’s SO important to respond. We don’t have a whole lot of time to work with. “Time is tissue!” This means the longer we wait the more tissue is affected. Remember, a heart attack, similar to a stroke, is the LOSS OF PERFUSION (of blood, oxygen, nutrients) to an area of the heart. Re-perfusion is the number 1 goal.

If someone you witness begins having any of the symptoms above, the first thing you do is CALL EMS. Now when you go to call EMS, you imagesmight here things like this, “Oh, I’m fine.” “Don’t do that! I’ll be just fine”. “It’s probably something I ate.” “This happens all the time. It will go away in a minute.” DO NOT LISTEN! It’s better to err on the side of caution.

Second, if its at all possible and there is no allergy to Aspirin, find an aspirin and give it to them. Even more important, have them chew it up and swallow it. This will thin the blood out pretty quickly and many times alleviate the symptoms.

The person may actually have a medication called Nitroglycerin lying around somewhere. If they do, have them place one under their tongue every 5 minutes for a total of 3 times. What it does is relaxes the coronary blood vessels going to and coming from the heart, which will help re-perfuse the heart.

Third have them sit down or lay down and loosen any restrictive clothing they might have on. They need to try and relax as much as possible until the ambulance arrives. We don’t want the heart working any harder than it has too.

As I mentioned, its better to err on the side of caution. It’s unfortunate that most people don’t recognize when they’re having a heart attack. You just never think it could happen to you. Remember, the number 1 sign of cardiac disease in 51% of all cardiac disease diagnoses is death.

This is why it’s so important to be able to Recognize and Respond.

I think I’ve covered just about everything I said I would. You should now understand how heart continues to impact us as a nation. You should also know how to reduce the risk of heart disease, how to recognize when someone is possibly having a heart attack, and how to respond in the case someone IS having a heart attack.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this. I hope it’s been real helpful to you. If you’ve ever been in a situation where you had to recognize and respond to a heart attack, please comment below. Also, if you have anything you feel would be important to add, I’d love and welcome all comments.

5 KILLER Reasons Nurses Make Amazing Entrepreneurs

Before I really get started here, I want to be completely up front with you. I truly believe the Nursing profession is AWESOME! I can’t think of another industry where someone can go to college for 2-5 years and graduate making $50K/year or more. That’s not just it either. As a nurse, there are literally countless jobs (not just bedside nursing) that can bring you lots of success and fulfillment. And for the sake of the topic at hand, Nursing is an excellent springboard into entrepreneurship. 🙂

The problem that I had run into 3 years into my career was I didn’t want a job and I didn’t want a boss. So, if you’re a nurse who would rather have the freedom from having to clock in and clock out every day, if you’re the person who would rather have complete control over your schedule, or if you’re the person who would like to travel the world at a moments notice and experience life to its fullest, maybe, just maybe, you’re an entrepreneur and didn’t even know it.

I bet right now you’re wondering if that’s even possible; if all those things you just read could even be possible for you?

They are.

In just a second I’m not only going to show you that as a Nurse it’s not only POSSIBLE for you, but I’m going to show you that you already possess the skills to make it a reality. All you really really need to do is decide to do it.

What I’m going to be covering with you specifically in this post is what I did to walk away from a perfectly fine full time job as a Trauma/Critical Care Nursing and create a global business that pays me week in and week out, whether or not I get out of bed. Sounds awesome doesn’t it? It is!

I’ll also be giving an explanation for the industry I chose to transition into and lastly 5 reasons WHY nurses make amazing entrepreneurs in this industry. Can you smell that ocean breeze yet? Let’s begin.

I want to start by saying I have had NO PRIOR SALES EXPERIENCE. I’m not, nor have I ever been in sales. Nor, do I consider what I’ve chosen as a “sales” type of business. I do however believe we are ALL selling something. As nurses, we are selling our patients and their immediate families on the idea we are fully capable to take care of them. We are selling our employers every shift that it’s a great idea to keep us on staff. We are also selling our patients on the ideas of what they need to do to live a better, healthier life when we are educating them.

I think it’s important to say this up front because so many people have limited themselves by talking themselves out of something because they felt they weren’t a “insert descriptive here”. “For things to change you have to change.” This is what my mentor Jim Rohn said. He was right!

In 2010 I was DONE. I had been working in Vegas at a Level II Trauma Center and was getting hammered every night. My wife worked in the Coroner’s office by day in forensics autopsying and I worked nights. We didn’t spend as much time as we liked with each other and I was getting burnt out real quick. One night, August 8th 2010, I had a night like no other. It was a tipping point. I went home that morning convinced that I couldn’t continue for the next 30 years doing what I was doing.

My wife, God bless her, was VERY understanding and supportive. She suggested I look around to see if I could find something that was a good fit that I could work on in my off time that could possibly sooner or later supplement my nursing income. After really diving in, I found that anything traditional I could choose was going to cost  A LOT of up front money and a lot of up front time. I didn’t have a lot of either. She later suggested I look at the Nutritional R&D company with which her mom was affiliated. I did. That’s when I was introduced to the WELLNESS INDUSTRY.

According to Nobel Prize-winning economist, college professor, and best-selling author Paul Zane Pilzer, the Wellness Industry is poised to become the next $Trillion industry, competing with computers. Wellness, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The Wellness Industry encompasses modalities (products and services) that help others achieve “wellness”.

Being introduced to USANA Health Sciences opened up my mind to the idea of becoming a Wellness Consultant within the Wellness Industry. How does Wellness Consulting work? It works very similarly to being a nurse in a hospital, accept your not. It’s a business that YOU own and operate. You set the terms, you set the pay, and it’s all done part time until it surpasses your nursing income.

What I do is, using my nursing knowledge and skills, I find out where people are healthwise and I help them to get healthier. This can be helping someone lose weight, customize dietary options, exercise programs, nutritional customization and more. This is why it’s important to have a product partner that has a diverse and complete wellness line of products and tools to help you help your clients the very best way possible.

This is one reason I chose USANA Health Sciences. Another is they actually EDUCATE you and even have a nutritional certification through Sanoviv you can choose to go through. However, there are plenty of potential product partners out there to choose from. After looking at many, I found USANA to be unique. It’s paid off more than I can tell you.

As I began to build my Wellness Consulting business, I ran into others nurses interested in running their own business as well. This led to me building a team of nurses and other healthcare professionals, all building their own Wellness Consulting businesses together. This provided tremendous leverage, which I can’t begin to explain in depth. However, with a team of Wellness Consultant partners our group began to expand to different countries as so did our clientele.

I must say it has not always been super easy, but building a business from the ground up is always challenging. It’s also created time freedom for me and my family that any traditional business could not. My wife is no longer working for anyone and is able to stay at home with our younger kids. I have returned to the hospital as a per diem nurse and work on my own time. It keeps me credentialed, provides some great extra spending money, and I enjoy it much more now that I don’t have to be there. 🙂

I believe that Wellness Consulting is the PERFECT business for Nurses and I believe there are 5 KILLER reasons nurses make not only great Wellness Consultants but great entrepreneurs:

  1. Nurses are great communicators-This is a very important skill to have as an entrepreneur. We’ve developed this skill working with patients from all backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, etc.
  2. Nurses are hardworking-It’s no surprise, Nurses work hard…incredibly hard. They deal with a lot of stressful situations EACH DAY. They could be tending to a cold in one room and tending to a code in another AT THE SAME TIME. Nurses work tirelessly and relentlessly every shift. It takes this type of work ethic to be an entrepreneur.
  3. Nurses SPECIALIZE in customer service-It’s what we do! Nurses work day in and day out to provide the very best of ourselves to our patients to make sure they have the very best experience they can have while we are with them. Being sick is a trying time for anyone, and we are there to help them get through it as best as we can.
  4. Nurses are people-people-Let’s face it, you can’t go into the nursing profession if you don’t like people. Working with people is what nurses do. Being a SUCCESSFUL entrepreneur requires you to not only like people but love people and love helping people.
  5. Nurses are SMART-As an entrepreneur, you’ve got to have some sense. As a Wellness Consultant you have to have more than sense. As Donna Cardillo says in one of her awesome blog posts “nurses possess a great body of knowledge and experience that is marketable, valuable, and in demand.” We bring a lot to the table. Nurses make AMAZING Wellness Consultants!

I hope I’ve convinced you. In this post I’ve told you how I went from burnt out nurse to business owner. I’ve opened your eyes to the Wellness Industry and Wellness Consulting. Lastly, I’ve explained to you 5 Killer Reasons Nurses Make Amazing Entrepreneurs.

I hope this has been helpful to you. Bedside nursing isn’t the end. You’ve got options. If you’re a nurse entrepreneur yourself CONGRATULATIONS! Please leave a comment and a shameless self-advertisement. I wouldn’t be offended at all! 🙂

THANKS FOR READING! If this has been of value to you, please like and share it with a nurse or anybody for that matter. Have a great day!

Timing is EVERYTHING

It’s November already! WOW! I remember January 1st like it was just last week. It’s been a great year for the Ward family. I hope it’s been great for all you guys. I know for many it has been and for many others it has NOT been. I want to take a few minutes of your time here to HOPEFULLY encourage those of you who’ve not had the best year. PLEASE read on…

When I look back upon my life I notice there have been seasons where everything that was happening was awesome. Business was good, finances were good, family was good, it was ALL GOOD! I also notice when I look back that there were times when things just weren’t progressing the way they should. Some of those times were just completely unexplainable. Life is just like that, but why?

The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 3:1

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens…”

This means that there will be tough times. I firmly believe that we are all here and called to support and encourage each other. Imagine if you NEVER had a difficult time at all in your lifetime. How would you ever be able to support and encourage someone and be empathetic if you’ve never known what it was like to go through a hardship. It would be tough, right? The toughest times are the times that make us into the people we need to become.

I heard a quote that went like this,

“Adversity makes some break; and some break records!”

-William A Ward

What’s the difference? I believe the difference is how we deal with the adversity. For ALL of you reading this, just know there IS a God, whether you believe it or not, and He cares for you enough to allow you to go through character-building times to help you become the person you were meant to become. Sometimes those times can be almost unbearable. God never said this life was going to be easy, but He did say he would be there with you if you call on Him.

For all of you out there going through the fire right now, stay strong. You CAN beat this thing! You CAN make it! You will get through and when you come out the other side, it will be awesome! Then you will be able to give good counsel to someone else having to go through something similar. Before you go, I want to leave you with one more quote.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

-John 16:33

Thanks so much for taking time to spend with me. If this has been of value, please like, share, retweet, etc. I hope you guys have an awesome week! You may not know, but I study and educate those that are interested in Christian Apologetics. Apologetics doesn’t mean “apology”, but instead is derived from the Greek word “Apologia” which means to give a response. In the case of Christian Apologetics, it literally means to give a response to Christianity. If you have questions about Christianity, God, Jesus, Science possibly disproving the possibility of a divine creator, or just having trouble with your faith because of circumstances I haven’t mentioned, check out this great website I love to forward people to!

Good morning friends! I’m really excited about some of the things I’ve got in the works for all of you out there! If you know me at all, you probably know that I have had some success as a nurse entrepreneur. You probably also know that I’ve helped lots of people achieve better physical health and financial health. AND, I’ve done pretty well as an author too! I’m not saying this to toot my own horn. I’ve said all that to say this…I want to help YOU ALL get to that NEXT LEVEL you might be seeking in your life. I firmly believe if you’re not growing, your dying.Life was meant to be lived and sometimes the only thing that’s stopping people just not having that friend or mentor that can really help give that guidance (based on experience).

This being said, I’ve really been creating some great content for all my readers out there that may be interested in becoming healthier and happier, whether that be through entrepreneurship or possibly fitness and/or health goals. Or maybe it’s just to be able to start dreaming again. Through the past 5 years I’ve come to realize that most people, as they get older, forget how to dream and often times become stagnant in life. LIFE WAS MEANT TO BE LIVED! YOU were created for GREATNESS! Let’s find it together. 🙂

I look forward to sharing all the stuff I’ve got in the pipeline with all of you. The weekend is almost here to any of you work-a-holics out there, which means 2 things:HALLOWEEN and TIME CHANGE. Remember Fall back!

I Spent the Night With a Crazy Man…Literally

I sat there in that hospital recliner listening to a man talk non-stop for 8 hours straight. Most things he spoke of made absolutely no sense at unnamed-3all. At times he would begin a story somewhere in the middle of the story. Other times he would be in the middle of a sentence and stop abruptly and just sit there staring into space, appearing as if he were listening to someone tell him something. At times he would respond to questions asked by no one in the room. He became quite frustrated when the female nurses aids would enter the room, often times cursing and raising his voice. He wrote furiously throughout the night on pieces of paper given to him at his request. “Here”, he said as he passed me a note he had written, “They’re out there watching us.” He was elderly, he was confused, misunderstood by most I’m sure. This man suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a psychological disorder characterized by abnormal social behavior and failure to recognize what is real and what is not. It’s a disease you’ve probably seen in movies where tjack-nicholson-the-shininghe character, often times, is involved in a series of murders or deranged acts of violence. Unfortunately, this nonsense has led to a stigma by the general population of patients suffering from mental illness. These poor souls ar feared by many, misunderstood by most, and made fun of by more than a few.

Mental illness is certainly no laughing matter. Because of its prevalence I’d be willing to bet many of you have been directly or indirectly affected by mental illness at one time or another. As an ER/ICU Nurse, I can tell you I’ve definitely seen my fair share. You know what’s terrible? What’s terrible is that when someone has a physical sickness, they get sympathy and love from those in their lives. However, when someone begins to suffer from mental illness, they’re looked down on or socially exiled. It’s for this reason that most people with mental illness choose not to seek help. Let me give you guys a few statistics that I believe will blow some of your minds:

  • 1 out of 4 people in the U.S. has some sort of mental illness
  • Severe mental illness is classified as having schizophrenia, major depression, Bi-polar Disorder, or psychosis
  • 5.4% of the U.S. population are classified as mentally ill
  • You have a 1 in 88 chance of being killed in a car wreck but you have 1 in 14,300,000 in being killed by a stranger with schizophrenia

I could spend a whole lot of time on this topic because there are so many different mental illnesses; from anxiety to eating disorders to severe mental illnesses as I described above. What I’d like to do is just hone in on 1 particular mental illness-schizophrenia. As I sat there with Patient X last night, I could only imagine the solitude he experienced daily. The fact that he was homeless wasn’t a surprise to me. Many of the homeless suffer from mental illness. My heart went out to him as he sat in that hospital bed talking at length about whatever random fleeting thoughts that would come up. Check out this great infographic on schizophrenia…

I certainly hope my post here will cause you to think twice before you judge someone experiencing mental illness. Fortunately there are many things that can be done to help those with psychological issues. If you or someone you know is experiencing a form of mental illness, please know that there are people there that want to help and that there is help. If you need to know where to start, click hereAre you worried you might have a serious mental disorder? Take this quiz. Thanks for taking the time to read my blog. I appreciate you guys so much. If you’ve found value in this, please “like” and share this post with the world.

Did you know THIS about Network Marketing?

Unemployment is on the rise and jobs are on the decline. Although the government would try to convince us that the job market is getting better, they don’t take into account all those that have just given up on finding work and just drop off the proverbial grid. This makes the job numbers appear to be getting better. All the while 52% of college graduates aren’t getting jobs in the fields of study they paid for, which is making it EXTREMELY difficult to pay back their school loans. It’s estimated that the average college graduate has over $30k in student loans.

Let’s face it, over the past 7+ years U.S. companies have grown quite use to running on skeleton crews. As a matter of fact, thStart-Network-Marketing-Companyey have gotten real good at it. The idea of going to school, getting good grades, going to college and then graduating, getting a great job and retiring in 40 years is a thing of the past. That idea was attributed to the Industrial Age, which ended at the turn of the century. We’ve now entered the Information Age and those who don’t move with the times are going to get left behind…way behind.

One of the most recent statistics I’ve seen on entrepreneurship is that 73% of Americans would like to own their own business. The idea of being the boss intrigues a lot of people. So why aren’t more people doing it? Well, they are! After the downturn in the economy in 2008 people began looking at alternative career paths. Instead of working for a boss, maybe I should become the boss!

These2eeb735days we carry devices in our pockets that hold more technology than space command did during the first Apollo Mission. We can communicate on a global scale for free and do it easily and effectively. This has allowed the ordinary everyday average Joe like you and me operate global online franchises from the comfort of our homes. How might you ask? Through Network Marketing!

The Network Marketing Industry has GREATLY evolved from the “Old West” days where there was NO regulation and pyramid schemes and scams were all over the place. It’s just not like that anymore, and if a company starts looking shady, they are shut down REAL QUICK. I’m not going to say there aren’t deceptive practices out there within the Network Marketing community, because there certainly are! But I can say that for EVERY single industry out there. As a network marketing professional who was HIGHLY skeptical at first, it is my opinion that Network Marketing is the most ethical and best way for the average person to take control of their finances and their liveimagess.

Network Marketing is SO close to franchising its scary. Accept Network Marketing is different and better than franchising in 3 ways:

  1. It is FAR less expensive to start a Network Marketing Business. Average Franchise costs anywhere between $250k-$500k. To start your own Network Marketing Business, you’ll shell out less than the cost of a PS4.

Note-I hate when people say stuff like, “Why do I have to pay to start?” What job have you EVER had where it didn’t cost money to start? I paid $50k to become a nurse. Even when I was a kid I worked at McDonalds and had to buy non-skid shoes, 2 pair of slacks, 3 shirts and a belt. When I worked offshore, I had to buy uniforms, gloves, boots, etc. Even if you wanted to start a Lemonade stand, you’d spend money on the pitcher, the cups, the lemonade, the stand, etc. EVERYTHING COSTS MONEY TO START.

2.With a typical franchise, the only one that gets the benefit of leverage is the Franchise Corporate Office. (leverage is when you get paid on more than just your efforts). This means as a franchise owner, you only get paid by the customers that come through your doors, while Franchise Corporate gets to recruit independent distributors (franchise owners) and gets paid a percentage of all of their profits. In Network Marketing you get the opportunity and benefit, should you choose to use it, of recruiting other “franchise” owners. This is a benefdonaldit because it gives you what Franchise Corporate has and that is leverage.

Note-Just because you have a Network Marketing business, you do not have to recruit. Actually, you can just go out there and sell products and/or services and make a great living on a very part time basis. I know people that do this VERY well. But the best way to create leverage is illustrated in this famous quote by the American Businessman John D. Rockafeller “I would rather earn 1% of 100 people’s efforts than 100% of my own.”

3.Last but not least, with a Network Marketing enterprise, one is not limited to a particular location. They can run their business anywhere they have wi-fi or cellular signal. Whereas, a franchise owner is VERY limited by the fact that he/she has to report to a building every d448659260_640ay in order for his franchise to operate. The franchise owner doesn’t have a job anymore, he owns his job and typically makes less than his employees. Which brings me to another reason Network Marketing is better than Franchising…employees. That’s for a different post. 😉

I hope this has helped! The Network Marketing industry has been REALLY good to us. My wife and I have built a global team of Network Marketing entrepreneurs and have enjoyed empowering countless people to own and operate their own businesses, putting them on the path to freedom.

I could literally right a book on Network Marketing (AKA MLM). As a matter of fact, I have! I’ve packed all the information I have learned in an easy to read format. This information is the exact system my wife and I used to build our Network Marketing business. If you’d like a copy of this eBook, just click right here!     s (4)_resize_resize_resize

The REAL DEAL About Gluten

Gluten-free products are on the rise. As a matter of fact, there are more gluten-free products sold on store shelves than ever before in history. This has created quite the concern with people, because those that don’t exactly know what gluten is are curious about whether or not they should be avoiding it altogether.  As a nurse I hear this quite often,”What is gluten?” or “Is gluten bad for me?” So I felt it a great topic to quickly go over so you all can be in the know.

untitled-infographic2Gluten is the stuff in bread that holds it together. It makes bread chewy and makes pre-cooked dough elastic so that it stretches. It’s actually a protein found in wheat and other similar grains, like barley and rye. People that have the biggest issue with gluten are people who’ve been diagnosed with Celiac’s Disease. This is, what they call, a genetic auto-immune disease where the small intestine has become damaged and causes a problem when it comes to absorbing certain nutrients from food. The good news is that only about 1% of the population in the U.S. has been diagnosed with this disease. However about 85% of those people are un-diagnosed or mis-diagnosed with other illnesses. The bad news is that there are about 5 times as many people who are gluten sensitive aka Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity.

Gluten sensitivity is a little trickier. Gluten sensitivity is the condition where there is little to NO intestinal damage that occurs with Celiac’s Disease and that this effects about 18 million people in the U.S., an
d most of them are adults. There is some growing research out there that is suggesting that people who have these gluten sensitivities aren’t sensitive to gluten, but instead to a particular type of poorly-digested carbohydrate the are calling FODMAP’s but this research is still in its early stages.

If you’re worried that you may be sensitive to gluten, have a gluten allergy, or may even be thinking you want to get checked out for Celiac’s Disease, here are some symptoms that could indicate you have an issue with gluten:

  • bloating, gas and/or abdominal pain
  • hard to flush, bulky or loose stools
  • diarrhea or constipation/itchy skin rash
  • tingling or numbness in hands and feet
  • discolored teeth or loss of enamel
  • canker sores/joint pain/fractures or thin bones
  • irritability or behavior changes/significant unexplained weight loss
  • poor weight gain/delayed growth

Although I’ve never had any issues with gluten, I have had many clients that have. Many of them struggle to find healthy food and snack options that are not only gluten free but taste good also. This is one of the many reasons I’ve chosen USANA Health Sciences as a product partner. Their food line is not only gluten free and delicious, but it is a low glycemic option. This means it won’t spike blood sugars and is a healthy choice for Type II diabetics too. Here’s a little video clip that I’ve found useful explaining USANA’s delicious gluten-free food line.

I hope this helps answer some of the questions you might be having about gluten and whether or not it’s a healthy choice for you. If you’d like some more answers on this topic, I’d suggest you go to the Celiac Disease Foundation website. It’s a great resource and is HIGHLY educational.

5 Predictions they got right; GREAT SCOTT!!! I know Doc. This is heavy.

In 1985 I was 8 years old. I can remember it like it was yesterday! I remember the tight-rolled, slim fit jeans and skateboarding all the time in the little town I lived in at the time. I also remember the first time I watched “Back to the Future” with Michael J. Fox. I was mesmerized. My love for skateboarding and playing the guitar only grew from there.

It seemed like FOREVER before “Back to the Future Part II” came out. I remember thinking “They just left us hanging!” The very last scene where the car starts to take off and Doc Brown says probably one of the most memorable lines in Hollywood “Roads? Where we’re going we don’t need roads.” I was REELING! Then, when they aired the first trailer for Part II?! I about lost my mind!

Well, today, as most245E422D00000578-2893737-image-a-22_1420154618736 people are aware, unless they’re living under a rock, is THE DAY. It’s the day where Marty and Doc Brown arrive 30 years into the future to save his son from ruining his life. Has it been that long? WOW! So how much have things changed since 1985? How many things did Robert Zemeckis get right and how
many things did he get wrong? To be honest, he hit the nail right on the head on A LOT of stuff. Why don’t we go through the list:

1.The first thing that pops to my mind is whenever the Older Marty is talking to Needles on TV! At this time, Skype wasn’t even thought of. However, its nothing to talk to someone face to face not just on TV screens and monitors but even on our PHONES! How cool is that?bttf-skype

2.There is one scene where cops find Jennifer in the alleyway passed out and they scan her fingerprints to locate her identity AND THEN scan her fingerprints to access the security lock for her home. The future is now folks! Apple paved the way and now other phones are using fingerprint scanning for security features. Plus, cops are using that same fingerprint technology to identify criminals and even locate criminals.

3.There is one scene where Marty’s son and daughter are wearing glasses to watch TV! Did you guys notice that? When the phone rings they both get the notification about the phone ringing through their glasses. I wonder if that’s where the think tanks at Microsoft got the idea for the Google Glass?

4.Them shoes though! Those Nik2D9904AB00000578-3281282-Despite_the_lack_of_smartphones_in_Back_to_the_Future_Marty_McFl-a-30_1445363435344e self-lacing shoes were THE BOMB! Guess what? It just so happens that JUST RECENTLY Nike has announced they were in manufacture mode of the Nike Self-Lacing shoes from Back to the Future and that they would be selling within the next year. I WILL be having a pair of those NO DOUBT!

5.THE CUBS WIN THE WORLD SERIES!!! Okay, maybe they didn’t win the world series. As a matter of fact, today the Mets finished off the Cubs with a 4 game SWEEP…ouch! However, it’s been quite a while since the Cubs even
made it to the World Series. So, although they didn’t win, it was ALMOST spot on, which would have been crazy!

Well, that’s just about all I can recall. Can you think of anything I missed? Post it belnormal_scnet_bttf2_0788ow. I’d love to hear from you guys! It’s too bad we don’t have hover-boards or flying cars or even Mr Fusion! We’ve still got quite away to go for those kinds of technological advances, but make no mistake the future is now. We wear watches on our arms that control all kinds of things, phones that we use for almost everything, and lets not forget the new autopilot feature by Tesla Motors. Haven’t heard of that yet? Check that out here.

5 Things you MUST do if you witness someone collapse…PLEASE READ

So it’s Saturday afternoon and it’s a beautiful day outside. As you and your afternoon dinner date leave the restaurant you feel the sun shining down on you while a cool breeze blows your hair back out of your face. Needless to say, its a beautiful day. As you’re walking toward your vehicle, discussing what you guys are going to do next, you notice an elderly couple walking ahead of you hand in hand. All of a sudden you see the elderly woman collapse to the ground. You and your date and the elderly woman’s husband are the only ones around…what do you do?

If this has never happened to you this can be a VERY scary situation. But have no fear! I’m going to give you some great info that you can take with you that will probably save someones life and make you look like a hero. 🙂

First, DO NOT PANIC! Know that everything is in God’s hands. You do what you can do, and He will do the rest. It’s your job to remain cool and focused on the task at hand. You’ll find when you stay calm you will be able to think more clearly.

Second, call 911. If there is someone with you, you will get THEM to call 911. Most of the time when someone goes down it is cardiac related. However, it could also be a stroke (brain attack) or a seizure. This being said, ideally, it would be great to get another bystander to go find a defibrillator. So, look around and speak SPECIFICALLY to a person and say “Go find a defibrillator as fast as you can.” If you are alone, don’t worry about the defibrillator. EMS will be bringing one with them. Even if they come to before EMS arrives or before someone comes back with the defibrillator, that person is still going to go the hospital because what just happened.

Third, roll them over onto their back and shake them while shouting “CAN YOU HEAR ME?! ARE YOU OK?!” If nImage79o response QUICKLY expose their bare chest and see if they are breathing by noticing if there is any rise and fall of the chest. While you’re watching their chest, your ear is up to their mouth to hear and feel if there is any breathing going on. This should take no longer than 5-10 seconds.

Fourth, check for a pulse. Try placing the pointerand middle fingers of your dominant hand directly to their right side of the throat. If no pulse, it’s time foCarotid-pulser some action. In this case place your hands on top of each other and begin pushing on their chest to the tune “Staying Alive” by the Bee Gees (or 100 beatsper minute). Be sure to push deep each time. Right now you might be wondering, “When do I do the mouth to mouth?” You don’t have to! The new guidelines place emphasis on “quality” chest compressions, not rescue breathing.

Fifth and final thing is to continue with chest compressions for as long as you can, for as long as there is no pulse, or until EMS arrives. If someone manages to bring a defibrillator to you, just follow the instructions given to you by the defibrillator after it has been connected to the patient.

So let’s recap:

  1. Don’t panic
  2. Call 911
  3. Check responsiveness
  4. Check pulse
  5. Begin and continue chest compressions until EMS arrive or you become worn out.
